view of not my boat, just one of many cruise ships in the various ports we hit
mmm, anchovies in my salad... see that fish, that’s where you used to live, the ocean
we sure do make a bit of wake, eleventybajillions of HPs... ok fine, 4 diesel engines generating electric power to two 360 rotatable pods. I did a tour... I’ll say things I learned
my main mode of transport for the week, I missed driving.
also not my boat
in the fjord (ford?) there was many icebergs, and little ships docked with us to take people on tours of the glacier
hi little ship
spin little ship
float planes are cool, and numerous in Alaska
I played motor in my own boat, thatsa me

so many many cruise ships. we didnt actually dock, that’s us in the middle of the bay
we got to tender back and forth

I’ve fallen
weird saddle sex chair things in this whale watching tour boat... not ok
the bridge
the captain on the bride. he was no doubt having a bad time, we were an hour late pulling out of port due to late returning tours
neat things on the dock
view out the front
hellooo salt and pepper shakers
so fancy
view from the bridge!
the bridge itself
view down on the portion of the bridge that protrudes, so they can view as they dock
duplicate controls. these are in the middle and on both of the protruding parts of the bridge
view down the side from the bridge
tee hee, me thinks WE were the pests :D
the anchor and mooring lines room
they were doing a brake job on one of the mooring lines
brake job cont.
the big hook that is 1 of I think 3 or 4 methods for ensuring the anchors don’t let loose
the neat chain pulling device for the anchors
the behind the scenes parts of the boat were just cooler, black and yellow stripes everywhere, and big steps up and down separating the compartments
love how much more detailed the crews maps were compared to ours
crew shore transports
the engine control room
another more detailed map
1 of 3 ship long passages on the crew area, each floor nicknamed for a state and the main passage named highways in that state
so. much. food! this freezer was just ice cream, and was bigger than most NY apartments. top of my head I saw ice cream, cheese, milk, chicken, beef, pork, dry goods, drinks, alcoholic drinks, fridges/freezers. Seriously, a LOT of food. the logistics were fascinating!!!
tee hee, “time control”. wanted to hop inside and see where Mr. Peabody and I went
hastily taken pic of the security codes.
our ship at night in port
bus stuck in Seattle have a vid of it being pulled out where it pulverized the brick beneath it

my first view of her
some cool cranes on the dock doing the hard work while we sipped mimosas
my next cruise will be on this thing. looking a little out of sorts in the dock amongst the shiny new cruise ships
our port buddy

I REALLY dug the more regal look of this blue cruise line
so I went to a mariners game, and afterwards walking past the convention center there was an auction. the doors were unlocked, and these fools ran in to get some selfies. security was not pleased. I remained outside and satisfied with my potato quality pics
a g g g g ghooost!
then... a rental car debacle!!!
oooo, thanks for the “compact” car. anyhoo, I whined like an infant on twitter, Alamo paid for my day’s rental and are offering me a discount for my upcoming Napa trip
boing tour!!!! if you are in Seattle, do it!
no cameras allowed on the tour, so all pics are from the visitors center. but those are the buildings we toured, where the 747, 777, and Dreamliner as made.
1 of 4 modified 747s that bring the carbon fibre parts in for the Dreamliner
a linup of planes ready and liveried, awaiting their final checks before delivery
welcome centre. after the car rental disaster we had literally zero time here, so these four photos are all I saw of it.

Dats a lot of pictures. How did your boat tour cost? I’m always tempted to do it...but can’t get over the fee.

Great pictures, love the captions. Some of them had me rolling.
I’ve never been on a “real” cruise before, only underway on Navy ships. I’m always tempted to take one though, just so I can sit back and get real drunk and laugh at the crew who has to do all the work. I’m an ass like that.

the behind the scenes tour included a surprisingly candid discussion with the ship’s head of HR, I was less enjoying the crew doing all the work when you find out things like the wait staff are 100% gratuity based, no base salary.
so... get drunk and tip well, THEN laugh at the crew :D

$150 per person, for about 3 hours behind the scenes, and a lunch that was epicly better than anything else I’d had on the ship, lamb that melted in my mouth so tender!
anyhoo, the wife didn’t join me, and she got a $108 massage instead. and a whale tour was in the same 100-150 range, so I thought it worth while. but yeah, there was some sever sticker shock.

Was it worth it? lunch aside? Also, speaking of which, I talked with a chef on one of the cruises we went on...want to hazard a guess how much money they spend on food per passenger per day?

I inquired of the man in charge of storing the food, for the week it was $2xx,xxx for food, and like $15x,xxx for drinks (mostly alcoholic). take into account the staff involved though, I bet its a fair chunk of change that goes to feeding a passenger.
was it worth it? yes. even without the spectacular lamb. the tour was fascinating, I’ve bored at least 2 dozen people with random facts I learned from it since. I was hoping it would be more technical about the ship, but to be honest the running of the ship (not so much the ship itself) was actually the more interesting part. Sure, 4 giant engines were why I went, but I kid you not see the food store rooms and talking to the head of HR was the best parts of the tour.

once you do the math on the meals, it works out to a couple of bucks per person per day...ALL day. pretty crazy economies of scale.

So mister helicopter pilot, think you’re the hot stick? Let’s see how good you are, put it on the H but miss the post after you come in under the wire. You have to ask yourself “do I feel lucky? Well do you punk?”
I assume this all folds away pretty quickly if they need to get a helicopter on the deck but it looks pretty funny at first glance.

yeah, you can see the compartments a little better here. that post disappears into the deck. I was pretty disappointed to not see a helo land on our ship, that woulda been awesome!
